This Weekend in Drabble History: August 2nd, 3rd, & 4th (Cartoonist Problems)
1987, 1989. 1992, 2008
Hi everybody!
A couple of days ago, during a conversation with my family at that fancy donut shop, a funny premise came up for a comic strip. As soon as I mentioned it, everyone laughed and said I should draw it. It would be a Sunday cartoon and I was excited to start working on it as soon as I got home.
For some reason, it was difficult to draw. It was seeming like a chore to get it down on paper. I couldn’t figure out what was wrong. I got to the last box and realized that’s where the problem was. The punchline was still funny to me, but I had reservations. I decided to sleep on it.
In the morning it suddenly hit me that the gag was a little out of character for Honeybunch. They way she handled a situation wasn’t true to her character. I found it interesting that I didn’t realize this right away. As soon as I knew what the problem was, I changed around the last box somewhat, and it all worked like a charm! I’ve drawn these characters for over 45 years. Why did it take me so long to figure out the problem?
I wish I could give you a sneak peek, but contractually I can’t. It will run on Sunday, September 22nd.
Here are our strips for the weekend,,,

Finally, I went to the grocery store yesterday. It was August 1, and I wanted to see if they really do put out Halloween candy this early. Here’s what I found:
Just a small section of shelves, but it’s a start!
No, I didn’t buy any candy corn pumpkins. I would’ve been embarrassed at the checkout line. Who buys Halloween candy so early?

Note to the ladies who date goofy guys. If you're going to get your name on a tattoo, make sure it's where your date can see it easily.
I agree with Ken's observation about the Sunday strip you're working on. Many times visualizing something, even something we think we should know, helps with working it all out.
Also, we're at that weird stage where the store shelves are stocked with back to school items along side the fist appearance of halloween candy and fall decorations.
Love the Jan and Dean reference! 🤣
A very curious current arc with Wendy...
