I never really thought about it at the time, but what were the chances that my mother would get a waitress job at a popular hang-out for professional cartoonists? And that was right at the time that I signed my contract. Weird! I wish I had made more of an effort to join their group, but they were much older and had established themselves among the greats. Although I had just signed a contract, that was no guarantee that I’d be able to earn a living with it, or end up in any papers. I wasn’t in their league yet. I’m still amazed at how kind Virgil Partch and Bil Keane were to me. Both were very friendly, very welcoming and very helpful.
